What is Autism?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.

Learning the Signs of Autism

One of the most important things you can do as a parent or caregiver is to learn the early signs of autism and become familiar with the typical developmental milestones that your child should be reaching.

What are the signs of autism?

The timing and severity of autism’s early signs vary widely. Some infants show hints in their first months. In others, symptoms become obvious as late as age 2 or 3.

Not all children with autism show all the signs. Many children who don’t have autism show a few. That’s why professional evaluation is crucial.

The following "red flags" may indicate your child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder. If your child exhibits any of the following, please don’t delay in asking your pediatrician or family doctor for an evaluation:

By 6 Months:

- Few or no big smiles or other warm, joyful and engaging expressions.

- Limited or no eye contact.

By 9 Months:

- Little or no back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions.

By 12 Months:

- Little or no babbling.

- Little or no back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving.

- Little or no response time.

By 16 Months:

- Very few or no words.

By 24 Months:

-Very few or no meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating).

At Any Age:

- Loss of previously acquired speech, babbling or social skills.

- Avoidance of eye contact.

- Persistent preference for solitude.

- Difficulty understanding other people's feelings.

- Delayed language development.

- Persistent repetition of words or phrases (echolalia).

- Resistance to minor changes in routine or surrounding.

- Restricted interests.

- Repetitive behaviors (flapping, rocking, spinning, etc).

- Unusual and intense reactions to sounds, smells, tastes, textures, lights and/or colors.

At Home Health Solutions Group we now know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, and each person with autism can have unique strengths and challenges.

A combination of genetic and environmental factors influence the development of autism, and autism often is accompanied by medical issues such as:

- Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders

- Seizures

- Sleep disturbances

Autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children.

Many people with autism also have sensory issues. These can include aversions to certain sights, sounds and other sensations. Autism’s hallmark signs usually appear by age 2 to 3. Often, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Some associated development delays can appear even earlier.

Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can live, work, learn and play in their communities when given the proper supports. Home Health Solutions Group works with adults with ASD across the lifespan, encouraging them to find meaningful employment and live independent lives after leaving the school system.

In-home Services. Many adults with ASD live at home or with a friend or family member. In the cases where additional care and support is needed, many people prefer to receive services in the comfort of their home. In-home services may include a companion, homemaking/housekeeping, therapy and health services or personal care.

Respite Care. Some individuals with ASD remain in their parents’ home far into their adult years. Sometimes families receive respite care support where a professional comes to the home and provides support services to allow the parents to partake in their own recreational or social activities.

Making Friends. Adults with ASD can be active participants in all areas of community life including social and recreational activities.

Early Intervention

Early intervention services help young children with disabilities achieve their goals in cognitive, social/emotional, communicative, adaptive and physical development.

Services may include occupational therapy to help an infant learn to hold her bottle, physical therapy to help her learn to roll over, or speech therapy to help her learn to eat. Most early intervention services take place in the home by our qualified personnel.

In-Home Care

Home Health Solutions Groupme provides the necessary support services to allow an individual to live at home. These services enhance people's independence in daily living.

Medical Support

Home Health Solutions Group can offer skilled supervision and health-related services on a daily basis.

Qualified staff administers medications and monitor a variety of medical conditions. Most often, therapy services (occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy) are available. Some programs also offer additional services such as bathing and personal care.

Adult Day Services

Our program put hope within reach for adults with a developmental disability, persons with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, as well as an individual with Multiple Sclerosis, or those who have had a stroke. In addition, these valuable programs offer respite, support, and education for family members and other caregivers.

Older Adult Services
